Build product pages that shoppers and search engines can use: media, specs, shipping and returns, related products, and SEO working with conversion — without invented reviews.

A product detail page (PDP) is the store’s most expensive template: it takes the catalog photo budget, most of the organic landing, and most of the paid landing. Its job is not to be clever. It is to let a shopper decide, and to let a search engine understand which product this URL is about.
This guide is the information architecture of that page: media, copy, specs, social proof as a concept, shipping and returns, related products, and how SEO and conversion share the same HTML. On-page SEO detail: product page SEO. Store-wide SEO: e-commerce SEO guide. Conversion loop: e-commerce conversion optimization guide. Shopify template notes: Shopify SEO guide. Marketplace titles are a different sport: Amazon product listing optimization.
| Job | Shopper question | Failure mode |
|---|---|---|
| Identify | Is this the thing I meant? | Vague title, stock photos of a similar model |
| Qualify | Will it work for me? | Specs only in a download PDF |
| Trust terms | What if it is wrong or late? | Shipping only at checkout |
| Transact | Can I buy this variant now? | Broken variant picker, hidden stock |
| Discover next | What else belongs with it? | Random unrelated grid |
| Rank | Which query should this URL own? | Category copy pasted onto every SKU |
Amazon listing work optimizes a marketplace slot. Your site PDP optimizes a web page. Reuse materials, weights and included-in-box facts. Do not paste Amazon keyword soup into the H1.
Order is a conversion decision. A workable default:
Accordions are fine if the content is in the page source or reliably rendered. Do not put the only unique specs behind a tab that never appears without a click and never appears to crawlers.
Photography is specification.
Minimum set for most physical products:
Video helps for fit and motion; it should not autoplay with sound on collection of PDPs, and it should not replace a still that search and slow networks can use.
Alt text describes the image. Filename can be readable. Neither should be a comma-separated keyword list.
Write for the query the product should own (model, SKU, distinctive product name). Leave class terms (“running shoes”) to the category. That split is the core of product page SEO and the SEO guide.
A practical copy stack:
Manufacturer boilerplate shared with every retailer is a duplicate. Add pack contents, measured dimensions, shipping reality, and support policy — things only you can stand behind.
Length: use the word counter to keep a house template (for example, short pitch under 120 words, specs complete). There is no prize for 2,000 words of synonyms. Keyword density is a stuffing alarm, not a target; use it in the SEO toolkit when a draft reads unnatural.
Price and margin belong in merchandising, not in the public essay. Still know contribution with the profit margin calculator before you add a bundle discount on this template.
Shopify-specific handle and variant behaviour: Shopify SEO guide.
Reviews, ratings, UGC and “as seen in” marks can reduce uncertainty when they are true.
Rules for this site’s editorial standard and for your store:
User photos help for fit; moderate them for safety and authenticity.
These blocks are conversion content. Hiding them is how carts die. See how to improve e-commerce conversion rate and the shipping guide.
Near the buy button:
Legal precision of the full policy: check locally. The PDP summary must not contradict the policy page.
The module under the fold trains the shopper whether you understand the product.
Good:
Bad:
AOV work is merchandising strategy, not a denser grid.
They conflict only when someone writes for a density tool instead of a human.
Shared wins:
Measure PDP quality with product conversion (orders or add-to-cart ÷ product views) as well as rankings. The conversion rate calculator needs a denominator you document. Template-level CRO is in the conversion optimization guide.
Do not clone a thin product onto a new URL to chase a synonym. Canonicalise or improve the real product.
Size and fit. If returns cluster on size, the PDP is missing a guide, a measurement method, or a model-stats line. Link the guide from the variant picker, not only the footer. A size guide is a supporting URL: unique enough to index if people search “[brand] size guide”, otherwise noindex and linked strongly from products. Do not duplicate a 2,000-word fit essay on every SKU.
Comparison. A short table (“this model vs the lighter version”) helps choice and can own “X vs Y” queries when both products are yours. Do not build a fake comparison with competitors’ prices you will not maintain. Internal comparison is merchandising and SEO; competitor scraping is a policy and accuracy problem.
Inventory language. “In stock”, “ships in 5–7 days”, “backorder”, and “unavailable” must match the warehouse. “Hurry, almost gone” is only acceptable when it is true. False scarcity is a dark pattern; the conversion optimization guide excludes it. For seasonal SKUs, a waitlist with a real notification is better than a silent 404.
Accessibility on the PDP. Name the product in the H1, not only in an image. Variant radios need labels (colour names, not only swatches). Price and error messages should be readable by a screen reader. Sticky add-to-cart must not trap focus or hide the gallery controls.
B2B and wholesale PDPs. If the same URL shows a login wall for price, search engines may see a thin page. Options: a public MSRP range plus “login for trade price”, a separate gated catalog, or two products. Pick one and keep schema aligned with what is visible. Check locally whether you must display tax-inclusive prices to consumers.
Structured data on this template. Product + Offer + BreadcrumbList are the usual set. Availability and price must match. Do not attach AggregateRating unless reviews are on the page. Implementation notes: e-commerce schema markup.
What to measure on the PDP. Product views, add-to-cart rate, checkout starts from this URL, and refund rate for this SKU. Rankings without add-to-cart is a content or offer problem, not a reason to double the word count. Use the conversion rate calculator on product views if that is your diagnostic denominator.
It is not a blog post that happens to have an add-to-cart button. It is not an Amazon listing pasted into Shopify. It is not a place to dump every synonym in the first paragraph. It is not where you experiment with dark-pattern timers.
If you need long-form education (“how to choose a mattress”), that belongs on a guide that links to a category and a short list of products — the pattern in the e-commerce SEO guide. The PDP still has to close the sale for the people who already chose.
Cross-check the buy box against how to improve e-commerce conversion rate: price visibility, variant errors, and shipping surprises are PDP bugs even when the rest of the site converts.
A product page is a structured argument: this is the item, here is the evidence, here are the terms, here is the button. Keep the argument specific. Search engines and shoppers are reading the same page.
Product SEO is unique titles, specs, variant indexation and internal links. Duplicate manufacturer copy—not missing adjectives—is the usual ranking problem.
Amazon listings convert inside Amazon’s search and buy box. Titles, bullets, backend terms and fees matter. This is conversion work, not a scraping playbook.
Conversion rate improves when you diagnose speed, trust, shipping, checkout and merchandising first. Redesign without measurement usually wastes the rebuild.
Product, Offer, BreadcrumbList and visible FAQ markup help machines parse the page. Never fake reviews or ratings. Schema follows what shoppers can see.
AOV is revenue divided by orders. Bundles and free-shipping thresholds can raise it, but discounts that crush conversion or contribution are not a win.
Long enough to cover identity, use, specs, care and the purchase terms that affect the decision. There is no ranking bonus for padding. Use the word counter to stay inside a template, not to hit a quota.
Usually no. Amazon titles are packed for marketplace search and rules. Your site title should read as a human heading and a search snippet. Reuse facts; rewrite the string.
No. Launch with complete facts and honest shipping. Add reviews when they exist. Empty or fake stars cost more trust than a clean page with zero reviews.
A short, true summary near the buy action (cost, ETA, COD limits) plus a link to the full policy. Hiding all shipping until checkout is a common conversion leak.
Preview title, URL and description together as a desktop-style search snippet.
Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs in product copy, articles or meta text.
Calculate gross profit and profit margin from revenue and cost. Use it before you set a selling price or judge a channel.
Calculate conversion rate from sessions or visitors and the number of orders or goals.
